What is a tax code?
A tax code (mã số thuế) is a number issued by the tax authority to a taxpayer to identify it throughout tax administration. Under Article 11 of the Law on Tax Administration 2025 (Law No. 108/2025/QH15), the tax code must appear on invoices, vouchers, records and documents used in business transactions, tax administrative procedures and when opening accounts at credit institutions. It is also used to exchange and share taxpayer information among management agencies.
Each tax code belongs to one taxpayer only. Looking up a tax code is therefore the fastest way to verify whether a business, household business or organization really exists and is currently operating or has ceased — before signing a contract, accepting an invoice or transferring money.
Company and Business Tax Code Lookup
Many people ask whether a company tax code and a business registration code are different. They are not — it is the same number. Once you know this, looking up business information by tax code is simple: one number gives you the full registration record.
Business Code and Tax Code
- The enterprise code is the tax code. Article 8, clause 1 of Decree 168/2025/NĐ-CP: each enterprise is assigned a unique number called the enterprise code, and "this code is also the enterprise's tax code". Therefore, looking up a company's tax code, looking up its enterprise code, or looking up an enterprise's TIN are all the same task, returning the same number.
- The enterprise code remains in effect throughout the entity's operation and is not reassigned to any other organization or individual. When an enterprise ceases operations, the code also ceases to be valid — so a tax code never points to two different companies.
- The code is generated and exchanged automatically between the National Information System on Business Registration and the Tax Registration Application System, and is printed on the Business Registration Certificate. This is why looking up enterprise information by tax code returns results that match between the tax authority and the business registration authority.
- Branches, representative offices and business locations have their own dependent unit code of 13 digits, linked to the 10-digit tax code of the parent company.
The information returned includes: full name, international name, abbreviated name, tax code, issue date, registered head office address, legal representative, business lines and current tax code status. These are also the three required items — business name, tax code and address — for issuing an invoice to a company.
Structure of 10-digit and 13-digit Tax Codes
Article 5 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC provides that tax codes issued by the tax authority take the form N1N2N3N4N5N6N7N8N9N10 - N11N12N13, where each group of digits has its own meaning:
Meaning of Each Digit Group
| Digit group | Position | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| N1N2 | First 2 digits | Range number of the tax code |
| N3…N9 | Middle 7 digits | Assigned according to a defined structure, increasing sequentially from 0000001 to 9999999 |
| N10 | 10th digit | Check digit |
| N11N12N13 | Last 3 digits | Sequence numbers from 001 to 999, reserved for dependent units |
Telling Apart 10-digit and 13-digit Codes
- A 10-digit tax code is assigned to organizations that are independent units; to individuals who are foreign nationals, or Vietnamese citizens living abroad who do not have a personal identification number established from the National Population Database.
- A 13-digit tax code (first 10 digits, a hyphen, last 3 digits) is assigned to dependent units — branches, representative offices, business locations — and to certain special categories such as foreign contractors who pay tax through a Vietnamese party.
- The hyphen (-) is only a separator between the first 10 digits and the last 3 digits; it is not part of the number itself.
Personal Tax Code Lookup Using Citizen ID (CCCD)
This is where many people search for the wrong thing. From 01/07/2026, individuals, households, household businesses and individual business operators use their personal identification number as their tax code. In other words, the 12-digit number on your citizen identity card is your tax code — there is no separate number to look for. What you actually need to do is check whether your tax registration information matches the National Population Database.
Transitional Rules for Personal Tax Codes
- Taxpayers who were assigned a tax code before 01/7/2026 continue to use the assigned tax code; however, individuals, households, household businesses and individual businesses covered by Article 11, clause 1 of the Law on Tax Administration 2025 use their personal identification number as their tax code (Article 37, clause 2).
- Individuals who were assigned a tax code before 01/7/2025 whose tax registration information does not match exactly or is incomplete compared with the National Population Database will be switched to status 10 — "Tax code pending update of personal identification number information". In that case, they must complete the procedure to change their tax registration information before using their personal identification number as their tax code (Article 37, clause 3).
- Individuals who have been assigned more than one tax code must update their personal identification number on all of those codes so that the tax authority can integrate and consolidate tax data under the personal identification number (Article 37, clause 4).
- Invoices, vouchers and tax documents prepared under the former tax code remain valid for continued use, and do not need to be amended to the personal identification number (Article 37, clause 4).
- Individuals, households and household businesses can check whether their information matches the National Population Database through the National Public Service Portal, the Tax Administration Information System, or their electronic transaction account. If there are errors, they should contact their directly managing tax authority or the local tax office at their place of residence (Article 37, clause 5).
The tool on this page looks up taxpayers that are organizations, enterprises and household businesses. Personal tax registration information is protected personal data, accessible only to the person concerned through their identity account on the National Public Service Portal, the eTax Mobile app or an electronic transaction account with the tax authority. No third-party website can legitimately look up another person's personal tax code from a citizen ID number.

How to Look Up Tax Codes Online
Whether you call it MST lookup, tax code check, tax code verification or taxpayer lookup, there are only four official ways to look up a tax code using authoritative data, listed below.
Four Official Lookup Channels
- Right on this page — enter the tax code, business name or address in the search box above. Results include full name, international name, abbreviated name, issue date, legal representative, business lines and tax code status. Entering a correct tax code takes you directly to the detail page. No login or captcha is required.
- General Department of Taxation e-portal — the taxpayer (NNT) lookup page, with two separate versions: lookup for organizations and enterprises and lookup for personal income tax taxpayers. Both require a tax code and a captcha, and you may add a name or address. Results return the tax code, taxpayer name, address, managing tax office and tax code status.
- National business registration portal at dangkykinhdoanh.gov.vn — search by name or business registration number and confirm the captcha. Results focus on business registration data: foreign-language name, abbreviated name, legal form, founding date and legal representative.
- For your own tax information — use the eTax Mobile app, the National Public Service Portal or an electronic transaction account. This is the only channel that shows the reconciliation status between your tax registration information and the National Population Database — see details on the personal tax code page.
10 Tax Code Statuses
The tax code status shows whether a taxpayer is operating normally or has ceased, temporarily suspended or abandoned its business address. The list below is taken from Appendix I of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC — the document that has replaced Circular 86/2024/TT-BTC since 01/07/2026.
Current List of Tax Code Statuses
| Code | Status name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 00 | Taxpayer issued tax code | A tax code has been issued. It is further classified as: not yet operating, operating, or an individual with no tax obligation arising yet. |
| 01 | Ceased operations; tax code closure completed | Dissolved, bankrupt, divided, merged or consolidated, or a household business converted to a small and medium enterprise, and the tax code has been fully closed. |
| 02 | Transferred to another tax authority (awaiting receiving authority) | Procedures at the departing tax authority are complete, but registration with the receiving tax authority or business registration office has not yet been done. |
| 03 | Ceased operations; tax code closure not yet completed | Tax code closure procedures are in progress, or the business license has been revoked, or tax debt enforcement has started but is not yet complete. |
| 04 | Operating (household or individual business without complete tax registration information) | Appendix I of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC records this status as no longer valid. |
| 05 | Temporarily suspended operations | Approved by the tax authority or competent authority to temporarily suspend operations for a set period. |
| 06 | Not operating at registered address | The tax authority issued a notice after verifying on site at the registered head office. This is the highest-risk status for transactions. |
| 07 | Awaiting bankruptcy procedure | The court has issued a decision to open bankruptcy proceedings and has sent it to the tax authority. |
| 09 | Pending verification of operating status at registered address | No tax return filed after 2 reminders, mail returned by the postal service, or classified as high risk when registering e-invoices. |
| 10 | Tax code pending update of personal identification number | An individual with a tax code that uses a personal identification number in place of the tax code, but whose information does not match the National Population Database. |
Each status code is further broken down by reason code. For example, status 01 has reason codes 03 (business reorganization), 04 (individual died, declared missing or lost civil act capacity), 07 (dissolution), 08 (bankruptcy) and 21 (household business converted to a small or medium enterprise). See the full list in Appendix I of the circular.
Distinguishing Common Terms
There are many terms used around tax code lookup. Most are simply different names for the same thing, but the last three rows of the table below are genuinely different and are often confused.
Which Terms Are the Same and Which Differ
| Term | What it actually is |
|---|---|
| Look up tax code · check TIN · verify tax code · check tax code | The same task: finding the tax code number of an entity and checking the current status of that code. |
| Enterprise code · company tax code · enterprise TIN | The same number. Article 8, clause 1 of Decree 168/2025/NĐ-CP: the enterprise code is also the enterprise's tax code. |
| Look up enterprise information · look up company information | Broader than tax code lookup: in addition to the number, it includes the international name, abbreviated name, issue date, address, legal representative, and business lines. |
| Look up taxpayer · look up taxpayer information (NNT) | A term used by the tax authority. "Taxpayer" covers organizations, enterprises, household businesses and individuals alike — broader than "enterprise". |
| Electronic tax portal · e-tax information portal | Different from tax code lookup. This is the electronic tax transaction system for filing and paying taxes and checking one's own tax obligations; it requires logging in with a tax account. |
| Dependent unit code | Different from the parent company's tax code. It is a 13-digit code assigned to branches, representative offices and business locations, appended after the 10-digit code of the controlling entity. |
| Personal identification number | From 01/7/2026, this is the tax code of individuals, households, household businesses and individual businesses (Article 37, clause 2 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC). |
