Look up personal tax code with citizen ID

Guide to looking up your personal tax code online: how to get a personal tax code, personal income tax (PIT) code and household business tax code. Updated under Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC, effective from 01/07/2026.

Short answer

The personal identification number on your citizen ID card is your personal tax code. There is no separate number to look for. What you actually need to do is check whether your tax registration information has been matched correctly with the National Population Database.

Diagram: from 01/07/2026, the 12-digit personal identification number on the citizen ID card is the personal tax code
The personal identification number and the personal tax code are the same number — Article 37 clause 2 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC.

What is a personal tax code and where do you get one?

Previously, each individual was issued a separate 10-digit tax code by the tax authority, distinct from their national ID number (CMND or CCCD). This gave rise to common searches such as find personal tax code with ID card number, look up personal tax code with CCCD, or how to get a personal tax code — people have their identity documents in hand but cannot remember their tax number.

The rules have changed. Article 37 clause 2 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC provides that taxpayers already issued a tax code before the circular took effect continue to use their issued tax code, except that individuals, households, household businesses and individual businesses under clause 1 of Article 11 of the Law on Tax Administration 2025 use the personal identification number as their tax code.

Practical consequence: if you are asking "what is my personal tax code number", the answer is on your citizen ID card — the 12-digit personal identification number. No website can give you a different number, because that number no longer exists independently.

Where can you check your personal tax registration information?

Article 37 clause 5 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC allows individuals, households, household businesses and individual businesses to check whether their tax registration information has been matched correctly or not matched correctly with the National Population Database, through three channels:

Three channels for checking personal tax registration information: the National Public Service Portal, the Tax Administration Information System and electronic transaction accounts with the tax authority
Three lawful lookup channels under Article 37 clause 5 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC.

Three official lookup channels

Channel How to use
National Public Service Portal Log in with your own electronic identification account and go to the personal tax information lookup section. The VNeID electronic identification app is available on Google Play or App Store.
Tax Administration Information System The tax authority's electronic tax portal or the eTax Mobile app — shows both tax obligations already incurred, not only registration information.
Electronic transaction account with the tax authority For those who have registered an electronic transaction account; you can look up and submit changes to your tax registration information directly through it.

All three channels require logging in with your own account. If information is wrong, contact the tax authority that directly manages you or the tax office at your place of residence to have it corrected.

Can you look up someone else's personal tax code?

No. An individual's tax registration information is personal data protected by law, and all three channels above require the identity account of that same person. There is no lawful way to look up another person's personal tax code using only their citizen ID or CMND number.

This is a fundamental difference from business tax code lookup: enterprise tax codes are published on the Business Registration Certificate and in the national business registration information system, so anyone can look them up. Personal tax codes are not.

The tax authority has a public lookup page dedicated to personal income taxpayers at tracuunnt.gdt.gov.vn/tcnnt/mstcn.jsp, and that page does have a "ID card/citizen identity card number" field. But read the asterisks carefully: on this form "Tax code" is the mandatory field, while the ID card number field is only an additional filter. In other words, it is used to verify a tax code you already know, not to find a tax code from an ID card number.

Any website that advertises the ability to look up someone else's personal tax code from a CCCD number is processing personal data unlawfully. Do not enter your ID card number, phone number or other personal information on those sites.

Can an old 10-digit personal tax code still be used?

Yes. Article 37 clause 4 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC provides that once a tax code has been integrated with the personal identification number, invoices, vouchers, tax records and other legally valid documents already issued that use the old tax code may continue to be used for tax administrative procedures and to prove fulfilment of tax obligations, without having to be adjusted to the personal identification number.

Cases where individuals are still issued a 10-digit tax code

  • Individuals who are foreign nationals.
  • Individuals who are Vietnamese citizens living abroad and who do not have a personal identification number established from the National Population Database.

If you have ever been issued more than one tax code, Article 37 clause 4 requires you to update the personal identification number for all codes issued, so that the tax authority can integrate and consolidate your tax data under a single point of contact.

Status 10 — tax code pending update of personal identification number

Individuals issued a tax code before 01/07/2025 whose tax registration information does not match or is incomplete compared with the National Population Database will be moved by the tax authority to status 10. In that case, you must complete the tax registration change procedure under Article 23 clauses 1 and 4 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC before the personal identification number can be used as the tax code.

Four steps for handling a personal tax code in status 10: information does not match, switch to status 10, submit a tax registration change application, use the personal identification number as the tax code
Process under Article 37 clause 3 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC.

Household business tax code

Household businesses and individual businesses fall under the same clause as individuals in the transitional provisions, so the way their tax code is determined is the same.

Four things to know about household business tax codes

  • Households, household businesses and individual businesses covered by Article 11, clause 1 of the Law on Tax Administration 2025 use the personal identification number of the household head as their tax code (Article 37, clause 2 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC).
  • Household businesses previously assigned a separate tax code can still be looked up using that same code, or by the household business name, on our tax code lookup tool — a household business is also a taxpayer included in tax registration data.
  • When the household head changes, the Tax Registration Application System automatically checks and transmits the personal identification number of the new household head to the business registration information system, and then updates the household business's tax code to reflect the new household head.
  • When a household business converts to a small or medium-sized enterprise, its former tax code is switched to status 01 with reason code 21, in accordance with Appendix I of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC.

Frequently asked questions about personal tax codes

Quick answers

What is my personal tax code?
It is your personal identification number — the 12-digit number printed on your citizen identity card. Article 37, clause 2 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC provides that individuals, households, household businesses and individual businesses covered by Article 11, clause 1 of the Law on Tax Administration 2025 use their personal identification number as their tax code. This means there is no separate number to look for.
Where can I look up a personal tax code using my citizen identity card (CCCD)?
You do not need to look up a code to "find" your tax code, because your citizen identity card number is your tax code. What you need to do is check whether your tax registration information matches the National Population Database, through the National Public Service Portal, the Tax Administration Information System (or the eTax Mobile app), or your electronic transaction account with the tax authority — following the three channels set out in Article 37, clause 5 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC.
Can I look up another person's personal tax code?
No. An individual's tax registration information is personal data protected by law, and all three lookup channels set out in Article 37, clause 5 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC require logging in with that person's own account. The personal income taxpayer lookup page of the tax authority does have a field for "ID card/Citizen identity card number", but the mandatory field is still the tax code — the ID card field is only for additional cross-checking and cannot be used to find a tax code from an ID card number. Any website that advertises the ability to look up another person's personal tax code solely from a citizen identity card number is processing personal data unlawfully — do not provide information to them.
Can my old 10-digit personal tax code still be used?
Yes. Article 37, clause 4 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC states clearly: when a tax code has been integrated into the personal identification number, invoices, vouchers, tax documents and other legally valid papers already prepared under the old code continue to be used for tax administrative procedures and to prove fulfillment of tax obligations, and do not need to be amended to the personal identification number.
What happens if I have been assigned two personal tax codes?
Article 37, clause 4 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC: individuals who have been assigned more than one tax code must update their personal identification number on all codes assigned to them, so that the tax authority can integrate those codes into the personal identification number and consolidate your tax data under a single point of contact.
What does status 10, "Tax code pending update of personal identification number information", mean?
This is a status assigned by the tax authority to individuals who were assigned a tax code before 01/7/2025 whose tax registration information does not match exactly or is incomplete compared with the National Population Database. Under Article 37, clause 3 of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC, you must complete the procedure to change your tax registration information under clause 1 and clause 4 of Article 23 of the circular so that the information matches, before using your personal identification number as your tax code.
In what cases does an individual still receive a 10-digit tax code?
Under Article 5, clause 2, point a of Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC, a 10-digit tax code is assigned to individuals who are foreign nationals, or Vietnamese citizens living abroad who do not have a personal identification number established from the National Population Database. Apart from these two groups, individuals use their personal identification number as their tax code.
Where can I look up the tax code of a household business?
A household business now uses the personal identification number of the household head as its tax code. For household businesses previously assigned a separate tax code, you can look it up using that same code or by the household business name, on the tax code lookup tool — tax registration data includes household businesses, not only enterprises.
Do dependents need a separate tax code?
Dependents are also covered by the use of the personal identification number. Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC also has a separate status for this group — status code 00 with reason code 03 "Individual has not yet incurred tax obligations", which applies to individuals who have been assigned a dependent tax code or who already have a personal identification number but have not yet incurred tax obligations.
Can an income-paying organization register tax on my behalf?
Yes. Circular 90/2026/TT-BTC allows individuals to authorize an income-paying organization to register tax on their behalf. Note: if you earn income from several places, you may authorize only one income-paying organization, and must notify your personal identification number to the other income-paying organizations so that they can use it for withholding, declaring and paying tax.
